Sapphires are one of the four precious stones along with diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. It is a variety of corundum or aluminum oxide and can be found in different colors, popular to contrary belief. While the blue sapphire is the most famous and well-known around the world, the gem is also found in colors like green, pink, yellow, purple, black and white.

Origin

There is no exact date to pinpoint when sapphires were first discovered or where. But their presence is seen in several parts of the world. Even the name “sapphire” was used differently. In ancient Greece for instance, sapphire was called sapheiros or “blue colored stone”. In Hebrew, it was called sappir or “the most beautiful thing”. Many linguists also believe that sapphire comes from the Sanskrit word Santi Priya meaning “dear to Saturn”. This is because of the belief that the gemstone is representative of the planet Saturn. Most of sapphires myths and legends revolve around the blue sapphire.

Common Myths Around Sapphire

While sapphire is one of the most beautiful stones, there are a lot of myths surrounding the stone. Here are the common myths.

  • Sapphire are Only Blue

As we mentioned before, the blue sapphire is the most famous, but not the only color of sapphire available. The variations in color are due to the presence of micro-impurities. For example, the blue sapphire contains traces of iron and titanium. Purple sapphires are because of vanadium. Yellow is because of the presence of iron, and sometimes green sapphires occur due to some difference in density.

  • Reverses a Person’s Fortune

In the middle ages, people believed that sapphires would protect them against treason and fraud, as well as the plague, fever, skin diseases, etc. In some cultures, sapphires are still believed to bring bad luck.

  • Sapphires are Naturally Blue

When you heat colorless and extremely pale blue sapphires to a high temperature, it gives them an intense blue color. This treatment also improves the clarity of the stone by removing minute impurities.

  • Sapphires are not Durable

Sapphire Stones

Sapphire Stones

Sapphires are among the most durable gemstones. Precious stones are rated on their ability to withstand scratches. This is based on a system called the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Sapphires score 9 out of ten on this scale. Diamonds are the only other naturally occurring element that can scratch a sapphire. A sapphire’s durability makes it an ideal choice for engagement rings and everyday jewellery.

  • Sapphires Bring Bad Luck

It is believed that sapphire is a manifestation of Lord Shani/Saturn. If the stone doesn’t suit the person wearing, it is supposed to bring them immense bad luck. However, many celebrities including Kate Middleton sport the gemstone. In fact, sapphires were often worn by medieval kings, who believed that the gemstones would protect them from their enemies.

Interesting Sapphire Facts:

  • Sapphires have been prized as gemstones as early as 800BC. In ancient Persia, it was believed that the sky was blue because the entire world sat on a gigantic sapphire.
  • Sapphires were also considered to be symbols of royalty and aristocracy, in all of Europe and particularly in France. It was made famous thanks to the Capetian Dynasty who ruled France in the early 10th century. During this time the color blue was expensive to produce and extremely rare to find. Therefore it became a symbol of prosperity and nobility and was exclusively work by kings, queens, and nobles.
  • Sapphires were worshipped in Asian countries, particularly by Buddhists who reserved the stone for deity and believed the rock gave one the desire for prayer and meditation.
  • In today’s day and age, sapphires symbolize eternal love, fidelity, and integrity courtesy Prince Charles who gave Princess Dianna a sapphire ring on their wedding.

Princess Diana and Sapphire

  • Because of their hardness and durability, sapphires also have industrial uses. The Apple Watch features a lab-created sapphire glass screen.
  • One of the most intriguing of sapphires is the color changing variety. These stones change color depending on the lighting. They have the ability to change from blue in daylight to purple in incandescent light.

What counsel has the hooded moon
Put in thy heart, my shyly sweet,
Of Love in ancient plenilune,
Glory and stars beneath his feet
A sage that is but kith and kin
With the comedian Capuchin?

Believe me rather that am wise
In disregard of the divine,
A glory kindles in those eyes
Trembles to starlight. Mine, O Mine!
No more be tears in moon or mist
For thee, sweet sentimentalist.

-James Joyce

Those born in June are sociable, humorous, and talkative. Born under the zodiac Gemini, June borns often exhibit childlike traits and are cheerful, restless, and full of life. They are very intelligent and are extremely inquisitive in nature. And just as a child is both soothed and intrigued by the silvery hues of the moon, the moon like pearl and moonstone are the birthstones of these candid, trusting individuals.

According to South Asian mythology, pearls were dewdrops from heaven that fell into the sea, caught by shellfish under the first rays of the rising sun, during a period of full moon. A tale of childlike innocence, wonder, and magic for the childlike June born!

Unlike most gemstones of mineral origin that are found within the Earth, pearls have an organic origin. Pearls are made mostly of aragonite, a relatively soft carbonate mineral (CaCO3) that also makes up the shells of molluscs. They are created inside the shells of certain species of oysters and clams when an irritant such as a very small fragment of rock, a sand grain, or a parasite enters the mollusc’s shell. It irritates the oyster or clam, much like a dust particle would irritate our eyes, and the mollusc responds by coating the foreign material with layer upon layer of shell material. Pearls formed on the inside of the shell are usually irregular in shape and have little commercial value. However, those formed within the tissue of the mollusc are either spherical or pear-shaped and are in high demand for jewellery. Many pearls today are cultured in oyster farms that sustain a thriving pearl industry.

Pearls possess a uniquely delicate translucence and lustre that place them among the most highly valued of gemstones. The colour of the pearl depends on the species of mollusc that produced it, and its environment. White is perhaps the best-known and most common colour. However, pearls also come in delicate shades of black, cream, grey, blue, yellow, lavender, green, and mauve. Black pearls can be found in the Gulf of Mexico and waters off some islands in the Pacific Ocean. The Persian Gulf and Sri Lanka are well-known for exquisite cream-coloured pearls called Orientals. The journey a pearl goes through to create a piece of jewellery is a miraculous event. Gemstones must be cut and polished to bring out their beauty, but pearls need no such treatment to reveal their loveliness.

Pearls were used in medicine as early as 2000 BC in China, where they were believed to represent wealth, power, and longevity. In Europe, pearls were used in medicine until as recently as the 17th century. Arabs and Persians believed it was a cure for various kinds of diseases, including insanity. Even to this day, lowest-grade pearls are ground for use as medicine in Asia. In India, warriors encrusted their swords with pearls to symbolize the tears and sorrow that a sword brings. According to Vedic Astrology, Moon reflects the human mind and has a profound impact on our thinking. Pearls maintain the stability of the mind and improve confidence.

If you are a June born and would like to own a piece of the pearls in exquisite jewellery, visit us at Gehna and talk to our design team about the fascinating ways you can wear pearls. Customize your own unique masterpiece by highlighting the subtle lustre of these gemstones with the occasional sparkle of the extremely well-paired diamonds. And if you are not one born under the dreamy sheen of the moon, maybe we have tempted you enough to own some moonbeam anyway?

Pearls are classic, iconic and feminine. They are a timeless addition to any woman’s jewellery collection and add luminosity to anyone donning them. Be it vintage, retro or contemporary, pearls are one of the top jewellery trends to watch out for in 2018. However, as lustrous as pearls are, they are the most fragile gems by nature. They must be cleaned with care and handled gently to prolong their allure. Read on to learn how to care for pearls.

1) Wearing Your Pearls:

  • When getting dressed, your pearls should be the last item you put on before stepping out the door. Moisturisers, creams, makeup, perfume and hairsprays contain chemicals that can erode your pearls’ natural luster over time.

Similarly, your pearls should be the first piece of jewellery to be taken off while undressing.

  • Never wear your pearls while swimming, exercising or showering. Chlorine and other chemicals in the water will tarnish them, as will perspiration.
  • Avoid cooking with your pearls. They are prone to corrosion by even mild acids like vinegar, fruit juices and lime juice.

2) How to Clean Pearl Jewellery:

  • Always wipe your pearls after taking them off and before storing them. Make sure to use a soft cloth to avoid scratches.
  • You can also use mild soap and water to clean and take care of your pearls. Never use harsh cleaners like detergents or solutions that contain ammonia.

Pearl Cleaning

  • Never submerge your pearl necklace in water or any liquid. This could weaken the string that holds them all together.

3) Storing Pearls Correctly:

Storage plays a huge role in when it comes to caring of pearls. Storing your pearls the right way is just as important as cleaning them.

storing pearls

  • Avoid storing your pearls with other jewellery. They can get scratched when other gemstones or metals rub against them. Store your pearls in a separate compartment, especially when travelling with jewellery. Also, always ensure clasps are fastened to prevent tangles and scratches.
  • Store your pearls in a silk, velvet or suede cloth or pouch. Any other non-abrasive material will work, too. Never store them in anything made of plastic. They emit a chemical that will deteriorate the surface of the gemstone.
  • Avoid exposure to a direct heat source such as sunlight. It is also advisable to keep them away from surfaces that emit heat like the top of the TV or near a stove.
  • It is not advisable to store your pearls in an enclosed space for a long time. The lack of air circulation will cause them to dry out. Take them out regularly, wear them around town and show them off to the world.

4) Restring your Pearl Necklaces Regularly

The usual period to restring your pearls is every four to five years, or less depending on how often you use them. This process is particularly important if the strand is worn out or has stretched.. Making sure you periodically get your necklaces restrung is a good habit to help you take better care of your pearls.. This is because the strand that holds them all together gets weak with time. And you wouldn’t want your necklace to break suddenly. There are two telltale signs that the strand needs to be replaced.

  • If the Strand Looks Dark – This is a sign of age and weakness. You should replace it immediately, or you will risk breaking it.
  • If the Pearls are Loose – If you take a closer look at your pearl necklace, you will see tiny knots in between each pearl strung together. Knotting is done for two reasons. If the strand breaks, the tiny knots will prevent all the pearls from falling off. The other reason is to maintain a minuscule space between each pearl. This is to prevent them from rubbing against each other and chipping their shells. To take care of your pearls, check to see if they are held tightly between the knots. A loose set of pearls with space between them indicates that the cord has become thin and stretched out.

Now that you know how to care for pearls, it’s time to buy yourself some elegant and classy pearl jewellery. You can also check out our detailed blog on helpful tips to keep in mind while buying jewellery, to make the right choice. There is something magical about a quintessential autumn wedding. The misty weather and the carpet of flowers formed due to the recent fall lighten up the ambience as love lingers through the air. Apart from getting all teary-eyed about your best friend tying the knot and embarking on an eternal journey of true love, weddings are all about glamming up and bringing out your glittering best. Read on for a few easy-to-wear festive looks you can rock this wedding season.

The Heavy-Duty Choker

A heavy-duty choker is the easiest way to add glitz and glamour to any outfit. These statement pieces can be worn with flowy lehengas, sarees and even classy salwar suits. Apart from complementing your wardrobe, an extravagant choker will also give the illusion of a long neck and highlight your collar bones. You can opt for classic kundan designs or a chunky pearl choker as per your style and preference. Dressing up for those mehendi functions just got a lot easier!

Emerald Choker

Chunky Earrings

This look works wonders for fun sangeets and cocktail parties. Add a touch of oomph to your festive outfit with splendid jhumkas or danglers. The beauty of wearing majestic danglers is that you do not need to accessorise with any other jewel. Danglers bring added focus to your face and work with your eye makeup and hairstyle. You can opt for luxurious chandelier earrings or go in for contemporary string earrings which cling on to the top of your ears. Additionally, you can try neon earrings with precious stones and add a pop of colour to a monochrome outfit or wear earrings in the same shade of your wardrobe for a timeless look. From trendy rose gold and striking silver to opulent gold, take your pick and keeps the compliments coming! For more insights, you can read our blog on how to choose the right jewellery that flatters your face shape.

Ruby Pearl Chaandbalis

Surreal Temple Jewellery

Stand out of the crowd with elegant and simple temple jewellery. Pair a traditional pair of jhumkas with a statement necklace having antique motifs and get ready to dazzle the other wedding guests with your charm. Bring out the traditional Indian goddess in you with an authentic silk saree and wow the wedding guests. You can also add a touch of festivity with gorgeous jasmine flowers and perfectly winged eyes!

Effortlessly Bohemian

Bring out your love for western outfits at an ethnic wedding with an unconventional indo-western look. Pair your gorgeous lehenga with a chic crop top or try on a contemporary dhoti saree. Make sure you accessorise with quirky jewellery to complement your outfit. Go in for a dramatic necklace with vibrant beads and precious stones as you make a style statement or dramatise your wardrobe with elegant hoops to complete your look for the reception.

Gold Pearl Bohemian

Tips on Looking Your Sparkling Best this Wedding Season:

  • Make sure you balance it out. If you are wearing a striking set of bangles, then keep the necklace and earrings minimal. Similarly, if you are wearing a stunning choker, you can skip the earrings and showcase the necklace as a stand-alone masterpiece.
  • If you are wearing precious gemstones, choose a colour which matches your outfit or strikes a pleasant contrast.
  • You can even use jewels to add a pop of colour to your outfit. Neon-coloured jewellery is the latest trend spotted on all international runways, and there is no reason for you not to try it!
  • When it doubt, always opt for statement earrings. They complement any outfit and enhance the features of your face as well. It’s a win-win!
  • Layering your jewellery is another massive trend which is very easy to pull off. Mix and match different styles of chains and necklaces. You can also wear a chunk of different bangles in varied thickness and designs for a dramatic look
  • Choose a style and go with it. From vintage temple jewellery to a classic set of pearls, find a style that suits you best and flaunt it!
  • Do not forget to try on chunky rings and dainty bracelets. These pieces may not be the main attraction but are guaranteed to add a dose of sparkle to your festive wardrobe.

So next time you get invited to a wedding, you know exactly what to wear. Apart from these gorgeous looks and helpful tips, you can even craft your own jewellery for an exquisite look. Head out to Gehna and help us help you with unique designs handcrafted to perfection as per your taste.

The February born shall find

Sincerity and peace of mind,

Freedom from passion and from care,

If they, the Amethyst will wear..

The planet Uranus rules the sign of Aquarius and governs the month of February. Those born in February are original and fairly eccentric people. Strong and fixed, they have inherited from the stars, an accurate intuition, a tremendous common sense, ingeniousness, and a powerful will. They are idealistic and can handle the difficulties of life with a smile.  Those born in February are over-sensitive and are easily hurt by others. They are loyal to those they love and espouse a good cause passionately.

Amethyst is a semiprecious stone and is the traditional birthstone for February. It is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry. Amethyst is produced in abundance from the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, South Korea, Maissau, Lower Austria, Russia, south India , and Zambia. The largest Amethyst mine in North America is located in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Up until the 18th century, Amethyst was included in the cardinal, or most valuable, gemstones (along with diamond, sapphire, ruby, and emerald). However, since the discovery of extensive deposits in locations such as Brazil, it has lost most of its value.

Amethyst is graded based on the depth of color, possibly of red flashes if cut conventionally. As it is readily available in large structures, the value of the gem is not primarily defined by carat weight. The highest grade Amethyst (called “Deep Russian”) is exceptionally rare and therefore when one is found, its value is dependent on the demand of collectors. Not only does the beautiful color make this gem so popular but the availability in different shapes and sizes also adds to its appeal. Amethyst complements both warm and cool colors so it looks fabulous set in both yellow and white metals. This unique ability means it enhances almost every color in one’s wardrobe.

Throughout history, Amethyst has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and numerous cultures. The name comes from the Ancient Greek a- (“not”) and méthystos (“intoxicated”), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. This belief has its origins in an ancient legend. The wine god Bacchus, angry over an insult, and determined to avenge himself, decreed that the first person he met would be devoured by his tigers. The unfortunate mortal happened to be a beautiful maiden named Amethyst on her way to worship at the shrine of Diana. As the ferocious beasts sprang, she sought the protection of the goddess and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his cruelty, poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as an offering, giving the gem its lovely purple hue.

The ancient Greeks wore Amethyst and made drinking vessels decorated with it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. The Romans dedicated February and therefore by association, Amethyst, to Neptune, their water-god. It is the stone of St. Valentine and faithful love and signifies ecclesiastical dignity as the Bishop’s Stone. English regalia were even decorated with Amethysts during the Middle Ages to symbolize royalty.

In Indian Astrology, Jamuniya or Amethyst is believed to protect and calm the mind of its wearer. . It is said to keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted. Wearing Amethysts is said to cure one of alcoholism or any other addiction. It supposedly improves concentration and hence is useful for those engaged in research. Amethyst represents the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) and Third-Eye Chakra (Agnya), and converts negative energies into positive forces, thus helping in meditation. It is a Gemstone of tremendous spiritual value and helps in balancing the chakras and awakening the Kundalini.

Also called the lovers’ gemstone, Amethyst signifies true love and fidelity. No wonder then that is a popular choice as anniversary gifts for the 4th or 6th year. Amethyst is believed to cure headaches, depression, grief, despair, and insomnia. In sacred texts it is regarded as an alternative to the Blue Sapphire and has the astrological energies of Saturn. In China the Amethyst find its use in curing stomach pain and back pain. It is also said to help overcome the inferiority complex.

While the benefits of wearing Amethysts close to your skin are several, it is also heartening to know that there are few known negative impacts of the gemstone. With the new multihued trend that is taking the jewellery scene by storm, Amethyst finds fresh popularity and appeal. Wear it in combination with gems such as Turquoise and Emeralds for an interesting play of colour, or with the neutral tones smoky Topaz and Diamonds for glamour. By her who in January was born
No gem save Garnets shall be worn
They will ensure her constancy
True friendship and fidelity.

A new year commences… and with our best wishes for prosperity and happiness, we bring to you this month’s Gem Gossip on a gemstone that brings to its wearer hope, happiness, and good fortune!

Saturn rules the practical sign of Capricorn and controls the month of January. January Borns are strongly motivated to succeed and gain positions of power. They possess strong organizational skills and strive for respect and accomplishment. The fluctuations of the Moon strongly affect those born in January and they must avoid nurturing depressing thoughts. Emotional and sensitive, January Borns are very responsible and protective of the family circle. However, they find it difficult to openly communicate their deepest feelings.

The birthstone for the month of January is the Garnet stone. Garnets are a group of silicate minerals that have been used since the Bronze Age as gemstones and abrasives. All species of Garnets possess similar physical properties and crystal forms but differ in chemical composition. The word Garnet comes from the 14th‑century Middle English word gernet, meaning ‘dark red’. It is derived from the Latin granatus, from granum (grain, seed). This is possibly a reference to pomumgranatum (pomegranate), a plant whose fruits contain abundant and vivid red seed covers (arils), which are similar in shape, size, and colour to some garnet crystals. According to the Roman historian Pliny, the large dull-colored “Carbunculus of India” (a variety of Garnet) used to be hollowed out into vessels.

This gem is available in a rainbow of colors, from the deep red Bohemian Garnet to the vibrant greens of the Russian Demantoid and African Tsavorite. It also appears in the oranges and browns of Spessartite and Hessonite from Namibia and Sri Lanka, and the subtle pinks and purples of Rhododendron. The light transmission properties of Garnet can range from gemstone-quality transparent specimens to the opaque varieties used for industrial purposes as abrasives. The mineral’s luster is categorized as vitreous (glass-like) or resinous (amber-like).

Garnets were used in former Czechoslovakia as far back as the Bronze Age and in Egypt more than five thousand years ago. They were used in Sumeria around 2100 B.C. and in Sweden between 1000 and 2000 B.C. They were also popular in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. According to the Talmud, the only light on Noah’s ark was provided by a large Garnet. In Europe during the Middle Ages, Garnet was used to enhance truth, faith, and constancy, and to dispel melancholy. As a Warrior’s Stone, Garnet served as a talisman in the Crusades for both the Christians and their Muslim enemies. Garnet is said to have been one of the twelve stones in the Breastplate of the High Priest and has been used as a sacred stone by the Native American Indians, the South American Indians, the Aztecs, the African tribal elders, and the Mayans.

Legends and folklore place garnet among the most ancient of talismans. Not only was it prized as an ornamental jewel, but its strong curative powers and protective energies made it invaluable. Legend says Garnets light up the night and protects their owners from nightmares. Garnets have long been carried by travelers to protect against accidents far from home. They may be the birthstone for January, but with their stunning variety of colors and mystical powers they have been given as gifts for all occasions for centuries. Garnet signifies eternal friendship and trust and is the perfect gift for a friend. Garnet is also known for its utilization of creative energy. It grounds spirit forces within the body. It is a sensual stone representing primordial fire, the creation of the world out of chaos, purification, and love. It is a stone of strong, intense feelings.

Garnet & Emerald Drops

Garnets that are the color of blood were not only believed to confer invulnerability from wounds, but some Asiatic tribes launched garnets from their sling bows, and later as bullets- the principle being that the blood-coloured stone would inflict a more deadly wound than a leaden bullet. Today, Garnet is not only worn ornamentally as a beautiful gem but is used widely in industrial markets, from watch gears and scientific instruments to sandpaper and abrasives. Garnets bring balance in life and eliminate all negativity from the mind. In Indian astrology, each variety of Garnet relates to different Chakras in the body. Generally, Garnets are associated with root chakra which is the life force in our body. Green Garnet has an impact on the Heart chakra while Hessonite works on Sahashara Chakra. Demantoid stimulates all chakras from base to crown. Garnets are said to enhance composure, strength, contemplation, and generosity in the wearer.

The healing properties of Garnet include increasing blood circulation and hemoglobin levels in the body. Garnets reduce inflammation and cure bone injuries. They also regulate the functioning of spleen, lungs, and heart.
Garnets are highly beneficial for businessmen and it is considered propitious to keep a few garnets in the cash box. They also reduce mental stress and depression, and encourage imagination and self-confidence in the wearer. They also foster better relationships and are considered ideal for frequent travelers to ensure a safe journey.

If cold December gave you birth
The month of snow and ice and mirth
Place on your hand a Turquoise blue;
Success will bless whate’er you do.

The planet Jupiter and the sign of Sagittarius govern the month of December. December borns are philosophers, natural teachers, and classified in Divine Astrology as a Truth Seekers. They are also attracted to holistic healing and travel to foreign lands. They can be extremely organized and have a quick mind.

The birthstone of those born in December is the Turquoise stone. Turquoise is an opaque, light to dark blue or blue-green gem with its finest colour being an intense blue. Turquoise may contain narrow veins of other materials either isolated or as a network. They are usually black, brown, or yellowish-brown in colour. Known as the matrix, these veins of colour are sometimes in the form of an intricate pattern, called a spider web.

Turquoise Chandeliers

Neo-Classical Turquoise Chandeliers

The word Turquoise, which dates to the 17th century, is derived from the French word turques for “Turks”, because the mineral was first brought to Europe from Turkey, from mines in the historical Khorasan Province of Persia. Pliny the Elder referred to the mineral as callais and the Aztecs knew it as chalchihuitl. Turquoise was among the first gems to be mined, and while many historic sites have been depleted, some are still worked to this day. For at least 2,000 years, Iran, previously known as Persia in the West, has remained an important source of Turquoise which was named by Iranians initially “pirouzeh” meaning “victory” and later after Arab invasion “firouzeh”.Turquoise is among the oldest known gemstones and its popularity has spanned the globe for centuries. It graced the necks of Egyptian Pharaohs and adorned the ceremonial dress of early Native Americans. This beautiful robin’s egg blue gemstone has been attributed with healing powers, promoting the wearer’s status and wealth, protecting from evil and bringing good luck.

Turquoise is rare and valuable in finer grades and has been prized as a gem and ornamental stone for thousands of years owing to its unique hue. In recent times, Turquoise, like most other opaque gems, has been devalued by the introduction of treatments, imitations, and synthetics onto the market.

The finest of Turquoise reaches a maximum hardness of just under 6, or slightly more than window glass. The lustre of Turquoise is typically waxy to subvitreous, and transparency is usually opaque, but may be semitranslucent in thin sections. The colour is as variable as the mineral’s other properties, ranging from white to a powder blue to a sky blue, and from a blue-green to a yellowish green. The blue is attributed to idiochromatic copper while the green may be the result of either iron impurities (replacing aluminium) or dehydration.

The pastel shades of Turquoise have endeared it to many great cultures of antiquity. Despite being one of the oldest gems, Turquoise did not become important as an ornamental stone in the West until the 14th century, following a decline in the Roman Catholic Church’s influence which allowed the use of Turquoise in secular jewellery. It was apparently unknown in India until the Mughal period, and unknown in Japan until the 18th century. A common belief shared by many of these civilizations is that Turquoise possessed certain prophylactic qualities; it was thought to change colour with the wearer’s health and protect him or her from untoward forces.

Turquoise renders its impact through its definite colour, its crystalline structures along with other inherent properties and characters. Both the positive and negative personality traits get influenced by the birthstone.

It provides wisdom of both earth and sky, thereby it is old and yet young. It is considered to be pure as it is believed to hold the atmosphere surrounding the earth and sky, thereby giving life and breath. It promotes prosperity and success and brings in happiness along with good fortune.

Turquoise has the capacity to absorb negative feelings that is prone to December borns. It is also believed to treat infections of the throat and lungs, diseases of the teeth and gums, asthma and other breathing problems, and depressions.

Sagittarians are prone to pondering on thoughts and Turquoise helps to open the communicative faculty in them. It also enhances activeness by offering strength and regeneration in thoughts and behavior that get reflected in actions.

At Gehna, we have experimented aplenty with these brilliant gemstones and have produced results not short of remarkable to celebrate the Turquoise. The remarkable Peridot stone is a lime green gemstone and is one of only a few gemstones that exist in a single colour. Olivine, of which peridot is a type, is a common mineral in magnesium and iron rich (mafic) rocks and ultramafic rocks. It is often found in lavas and in peridotite inclusions in igneous rocks of the mantle that lavas carry to the surface. Peridot can be also found in meteorites. Olivine, in general, is a very abundant mineral, but gem quality peridot is rather rare. This is due to the mineral’s chemical instability on the Earth’s surface. Olivine is usually found as small grains, and tends to exist in a heavily weathered state, unsuitable for decorative use. Large crystals of forsterite, the variety most often used to cut peridot gems is rare. As a result olivine is considered precious. Peridot gemstones smaller than three carats are very common, but gemstones over five carats are rare and therefore have a higher value. Peridot in the 10 to 15-carat size range are rarer still, but provide a big and bold look at an affordable price.

Peridot

            Peridot

Peridot olivine is mined in Arkansas, Arizona on the San Carlos Reservation, Hawaii, Nevada, and New Mexico at Kilbourne Hole, in the US, and in Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Kenya, Mexico, Myanmar (Burma), Norway, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Today, most Peridot comes from Arizona but it is also found in China, Myanmar, and Pakistan. Peridot is available in several colours ranging from yellowish green to brown, but the bright lime greens and olive greens are the most desired.

Leos are considered to be the torch bearers, those who initiate action and thus are capable of bringing about a change.

Along with being the birthstone of August, peridot is considered auspicious for couples celebrating their 16th anniversary. Peridot is believed to instill power and influence as well as bring the wearer magical powers and properties that protect against nightmares.
